Lacko castle lacks nothing.
Reminiscent of a typical fairly-tale castle, Lacko Slott is built in 17th century Swedish baroque style, complete with towers, turrets, an immense lake next to it and a lovely garden. The approach to it is beautiful, a lovely walk that will make you look forward to seeing what’s inside.
It has been rated as Sweden’s most beautiful castle. It is located 23 km north of Lidköping on Kallandso island on the shores of Lake Vänern, the largest lake in Sweden and the third largest lake in Europe. The castle has an 800 year history, and its oldest parts date from the Middle Ages.
INSIDE THE CASTLE
There are lots of things to admire inside the castle – interesting rooms, including the grand apartments, the Count’s private chambers, the Banquet Hall where 55-course meals used to be served, and a chamber flaunting the German double-headed eagle, maybe taunting the “enemy”. There are many pictures of Swedish battles and historic figureheads. The 40-minute guided tour covers them all. You can also roam around in the kitchen, dungeon, armour chamber, chapel and the terraced castle gardens.
There is a huge garden at the back of the castle, next to the lake. It is not just ornamental, but functional as well. It produces fresh vegetables and herbs which are served in the castle’s restaurant – Hvita Hjorten (The White Deer Restaurant).
We had a delicious lunch at the restaurant, located in the bright, open ground floor with fabulous views of Läckö Castle and Lake Vänern. The meals were prepared with the local produce from the Castle Garden and local vegetable growers, fishermen, farmers and hunters. The delightful ambiance added to the pleasure of the meal, and we had a very enjoyable lunch.
THE VICTORIA HOUSE
Naturum Vänerskärgården – the Victoria House – located about 350m from Läckö Castle, has facilities for accommodation if you would like to spend a night here. These rooms have the beautiful view of the forest, castle, garden and the Vänern archipelago.
The Victoria House also has a jetty deck where you could sit with your binoculars or take a boat trip to Djurö National Park and to other beautiful natural areas and fishing villages in the Väner area. Or you could paddle a canoe yourself!
This could be nice day trip to see and enjoy it all especially when the weather is good in summer.
If you like an old castle in scenic settings, Lacko Slott is the place for you!
Love exploring castles when we travel. I never think of Sweden as a castle place. That lunch venue overlooking the lake looks amazing. I do love the taste of local produce. Have added this to my Sweden bucket list 🙂
I have only been to Stockholm and am really interested in seeing more of Sweden. This looks worth seeing. Thanks for th ideas.
This is what I love about travelblogs, you get to learns something new everyday!
I am actually from Stockholm in Sweden, and I have never heard of this plac, so thank you 😀
This definitely looks worth seeing. A Banquet Hall where 55-course meals used to be served. Amazing
I haven’t heard of this. I have only been to Stockholm and didn’t manage to explore more so far.
What a gorgeous place! It would be so much fun to stay overnight there. I love that the restaurant uses produce grown in the garden on-site. Thanks for sharing about this location. I love castles!
We have seen so little of Sweden. Certainly would want to add Lacko Slott to the list if we are back visiting in that area. This looks like a great spot for lunch and a view. Especially with a lunch from local produce.
Lacko castle is beautiful! I love trying to visit castles in different cities and while I have not heard of this one before I will have to add it to my list for whenever I get to Sweden 🙂
This looks like a lot of fun. There is a castle not to far from my hometown that I visited a couple years ago. So interesting walking through all the rooms, and my daughter loved running through them! Naturum Vänerskärgården sounds lovely, I’ve always wanted to spend the night in a castle, but haven’t gotten the chance.
Wow, what a gorgeous castle! I’d love to explore those gardens at the back. Thanks for the detailed post, I’ll have to add this to my list of I ever make it to Sweden!
I’m a huge fan of castles, and this one in Sweden makes me want to see it in person. Lacko Castle also has some lovely views of the water, I understand why it was given its title.
Lacko Sweden definitely looks like fun, being a history buff it is my kind of place. The lunch looked inviting, and one can go for a small jetty tide, after lunch completion. Thanks for the informative piece.
That is indeed a beautiful castle. It is not gilded but simply elegant.
Lacko castle looks beautiful and a fairy tale type of castle. Even the backdrop of castle is very beautiful with lots of greenery as it is situated on the shores of Lake Vänern, which is the largest lake in Sweden. Good to know it is 800 years old and has historically connected with Middle Ages too.
