A leisurely day drive to explore an interesting strip of land led us to learn some history and view pristine harbours, birds, beaches, landscape and finally a nature reserve with hiking options.
We based ourselves in Lund, in the Skåne region of Southern Sweden. A short drive in the north west direction took us to Landskrona – an almost off-the-beaten-track city on the shores of Oresund.
This coastal town is situated on the the Öresund Strait, which separates Sweden from Denmark. Landskrona has a rich history, with evidence of settlement dating back to the Viking era.
LANDSKRONA CITADEL
The Landskrona Citadel is a well-preserved 16th century fortress, built by King Christian III of Denmark. It is famous for its well preserved moat system. There are three canals encircling the central fortress. North of the citadel is a port based on a natural chute in the sea floor.
We loved the picture perfect walking area, with trees and greenery, ideal for a relaxing stroll. There were plenty of narrow paths that crisscrossed the area and ran along the moats, with a bridge crossing over the moat into the citadel where we took a break and relaxed with a coffee before continuing the stroll down to the shoreline.
The Halvmånen strand, full of hundreds of birds bobbing on the water, was next to the Citadellkliniken.
LERHAMN
We drove further north past Helsingborg and Hoganas to the beautiful, almost deserted harbour of Lerhamn. It looked like a small fishing village and we enjoyed the views of the rocky beach, hundreds of birds, boats and shoreline.
KULLABERG NATURE RESERVE
We drove further on towards Kullaberg Nature Reserve (Naturum Kullaberg) through winding roads and greenery, reaching the slopes to the beautiful Kullaberg peninsula where the cliffs plunge, up to 200 feet, vertically into the sea. We loved the rugged terrain and the panoramic views over Öresund and Kattegat. There was an interesting Visitor Center and Kullens Lighthouse, 100 years old and the strong light from the lighthouse visible from 30 miles.
There is an interesting exhibition and displays at the Kullen light house with information about this area. The naturum in Kullaberg is a great place to learn about native birds, mushrooms, plants and animals that live around this peninsula. We walked down to the tip of the rocks and enjoyed some awesome views.
There was a hiking trail (about 3 miles) through a wonderful forested part of Kullaleden, with some interesting view points.
Kullaberg nature reserve is an excellent place for hiking, climbing, sea viewing, watching sunsets from the precipice of the cliffs.
But a lovely day was nearing the end, and we had to head back to Lund!

Sounds lovely!
Oh hello there, welcome to Sweden 🙂
I have not been to Lund since I was a young child, but we use to travel so much through Sweden back then. I kind of miss traveling within my own country 🙂
We stayed in Stockholm when we visited Seeded. You had a great drive through the countryside with a forest, a forest, water, and even a lighthouse!
I have not been to Sweden but it is a place I would like to visit. The 3k hike through the forest sounds great, I bet the views are wonderful.
I’ve only ever been to Stockholm before on a business trip, but I’d love to spend more time exploring Sweden and the surrounding landscapes. It’s so close to the UK, but because of the weather I’ve always steered clear. But when I had to spend an extended time there in the winter time, I realized how unique and multi-cultural this country is.
We have only tipped our toes into Sweden. So great to find some more spots to visit. Lund looks like it has some lovely outdoor spots to enjoy. Great hiking paths and views. One to add to our list when we re-visit for a longer stay.
I have never been to Sweden, but I would love to visit sometime! I love it when you can take a drive and explore off the beaten track places like these. Plus, any view of the water and I’m in!
I actually have a thing for lighthouses. I love the calm and serene vibes it gives. Being near the ocean also calms me down so a trip here is in order.
Oh wow, it does look gorgeous! I haven’t been to Lund yet but now I’m definitely keen to explore it!
These are all such beautiful spots! I have not visited Lund yet (or any of Sweden) so I can’t wait to explore all of these areas one day 🙂
I’ve only visited Stockholm, but I’d love to go back and spend some time exploring more of Sweden. Landskrona looks so beautiful, and I love that there are walking trails to enjoy the scenery and a lighthouse! I’ll have to put this area on my list for when I go back.
I was reading the other day that post Covid, its countries like Sweden, Finland and Norway that are going to get more attention from leisure travellers because they’re not over crowded, are beautiful and automatically socially distanced due to less population. Lund seems to be a lovely town, I’d love to visit Sweden someday and enjoy these lovely scenes myself.
Wow, there are so many beautiful stops along this drive! I would love to see the Kullens Lighthouse and harbour of Lerhamn. I love that it is so secluded and would love to spend some time watching the birds. The 3 mile hike sounds nice as well, I would love to check out some of those viewpoints.
Was supposed to here last month but suddenly those travelling from Malta weren’t welcome any more. Looks gorgeous and hopefully I’ll get to Lund next year.
So this is what Lund looks like! A couple of years ago, I’ve visited my daughter in Malmö and one of our plans for that weekend was going to Lund. Although it’s really close by, we finally didn’t make it since the weather was so bad. Next time I’m going to Malmö, I’ll visit Lund for sure.
